Profiler Roy Hazelwood is the world's leading expert on the strangest and most dangerous of all aberrant offenders--the sexual criminal. In Dark Dreams he reveals the twisted motives and perverse thinking that go into the most reprehensible crimes. He also catalogs the innovative and remarkably effective techniques--techniques that he helped pioneer at the FBI's Behavioral Science Unit--that allow Law Enforcement agents to construct psychological profiles of the offenders who comit them.Hazelwood has helped track down some of the most violent and well known criminals in modern history; in Dark Dreams he takes readers into his world--a sinister world inhabited by scores of dangerous offenders for every Roy Hazelwood who would put them behind bars. These are sexual sadists, serial rapists, child molesters, and serial killers. The cases he describes are as shocking as they are perplexing; their resolutions are as fascinating as they are innovative:* A young woman disappears from the convenience store where she works. Her body is later found in a field, strapped to a makeshift St. Andrew's Cross and mutilated beyond description. Who committed this heinous crime? And why?* A teenager's corpse is found hanging in a storm sewer. His clothes are neatly folded by the entrance and a stopwatch lies in the grime beneath him. Is he the victim of a bizarre, ritualistic murder . . . or an elaborate masturbatory fantasy gone awry?* A married couple, driving with their toddler in the back seat, pick up a female hitchhiker. They kidnap her and for seven years keep her in a box under their bed as a sexual slave. The wife had agreed to this inhuman arrangement in exchange for a second child. Who was to blame? But as gruesome as the crimes are and as unsettling as the odds seem, Hazelwood, writing with veteran journalsit Stephen Michaud, proves that the right amounts of determination and logic can bring even the most cunning and devious criminals to justice.Dark Dreams is a 2002 Edgar Award Nominee for Best Fact Crime.

The Author details many cases in this book with his 22 year career at the FBI and 16 years in the BSU making it a very fast moving, gripping, educational read. While in the BSU (Behavioral Science Unit) they discovered only 3% of the mentally ill are responsible for sex crimes in fact many of the serial sexual murders and rapist are actually quite smart and well thought of by people they know but hide a dark and disturbing secret, another fact I found interesting is the FBI found that St.Augustines 5 steps to sin is just like the 5 steps to crime. In the past rape was considered a crime of passion which we all new was a lie as Hazelwood explains it a tool of aggression, assertion of power, expression of anger and actually serves non sexual needs his gratification comes from assertion of power and most are sodomites. The author and his cohorts also found that interviewing ritualistic killers was a wast of time and most are European white but the FBI theorizes that as minorities move up in class they will join the mix.The author served in Viet Nam and saw grotesque and brutal mutilations before becoming an FBI agent and concludes his book with a dire out look for the foreseeable future stating what was once considered taboo or even criminal is now acceptable for instance, body piercing was called sexually deviant now it fashionable, physically injuring some one during sex was criminal today Lawyers adjudicate it as rough sex, tying someone up was aberrant now its considered sex play all of that coupled with video cameras and the internet will make a more depraved and violent offenders and killers. The FBI has so thoroughly analyzed these people that I would say the only thing they are missing is look to the Bible for more clues they have already used St.Augustines views so look at Genesis chapter 6 giants and men of renown maybe they were men of infamy check body similarities or DNA its been long thought that it was the Satanic blood line who else would have little regard for another person? perhaps another species of man.
Roy Hazelwood and Michaud are a great combo. I loved reading Roy, John Douglas and Robert Ressler. Hazelwood seems to have a softer tone then both which I appreciated (Douglas ambitious and young, Ressler old school and very methodical), I think he is a great compliment to the others who were giants in profiling. Dark Dreams was my first Roy book I had the pleasure of reading, and would recommend it!The book is great, if you like reading about profiling in general it will be great read; lots of inside looks into how Roy started his methodology and studies/material he has put out there academically. However that is only a small portion, just how Roy looks at cases and breaks them down just feels like he can make any laymen at least follow his thinking and show you how his thought process worked in certain cases/situations. Awesome book, cheers to Hazelwood and Michaud again.
Bought this for my kindle. Quick read. I’m a huge fan of John Douglas’s books and this was very similar. I would read it again- although most of the information I already knew but I do like the true crime stories he wrote about. I was more so looking forward to the cases in each chapter versus the factual information such as different kinds of sexual offender. All in all it was a good book.
If you want to be disappointed in humanity, look no further. I can only read this book in spurts or else I get very upset with the state of humanity as a whole. The information in this book represents only a small percent of people but the book pulls you in on the gruesome details to the point where you have to have something happy on hand.
I'm a big fan of Roy Hazelwood's work, so I might be a bit bias here.Dark Dreams talks a lot about the kind of criminals that most people don't want to believe even exist. It gets very, very dark... even more so when you know that the subjects are real people who committed some very horrible deeds. Definitely not one for the queasy or the young! The humor of the authors peek out from time to time which is enjoyable, if you can appreciate a little gallows humor.
Dark Dreams is a brilliantly written, if disturbing, look into the mindset of sexual predators as told by one of the giants in the field of criminal profiling, Roy Hazelwood. It is one of those books you just can't put down, but at the same time does not needlessly sensationalize the rather dark subject matter. You get the dirty details essential to each case cited and the author explains the hows and whys behind the perpetrator's actions. Very readable and far less dry that most books of the true crime genre. If you have even the slightest interest in forensic psychology or the process of criminal profiling, this book is a must!
Meh. Nothing necessarily too special or mindblowing going on here. A lot of unsupported generalizations, conclusions, and associations that seem to make sense on the surface but don't necessarily hold up too well under scrutiny. Typical cop stuff that might hold true 51% of the time or more, but not anywhere near impressively enough compared to what "they" want you to believe. Put another way, for every example used to support an assertion, you can find examples where the posited "theme" doesn't work all that well. But...it's a popular topic within a popular genre. Just too many overgeneralizations compared to reality.
This three-star is not a bad review. It's an illuminating read for those wanting a blend of true crime grit and some procedural elements to the science of profiling. However, if you want anything more than an overview, or references, a bibliography, etc. - look elsewhere. Still would recommend.
